Every room begins with material and use — not mood boards. Imogen and Callum work from the fabric of a building outward: the quality of its light, the weight of its walls, the way a household actually moves through space. Lime plaster, reclaimed timber, hand-thrown tile are not aesthetic choices so much as honest ones — materials that age well because they were right to begin with.

Listen, then look.
Every project begins with a visit — to the building and to the people who will live or work in it. We ask how a space is used before we consider how it should look. The brief is built from conversation, not questionnaires.
Material before mood.
We develop room schemes from the fabric outward — plaster, timber, tile, colour — specifying materials we know and trust. Furniture is sourced to complement, not to lead. Drawings are clear enough for any good builder to follow.
On site, throughout.
We manage projects from first fix to final placement. As a two-person studio, either Imogen or Callum is present at every significant stage — not delegated to an assistant. The work is finished when it is right.

Two people. One practice.
Wren & Slate was founded in Frome in 2019 by Imogen Wren and Callum Slate. The studio works on houses, small hotels and shops — projects where the quality of a room matters to the people who use it every day.
Imogen leads on spatial planning, colour and material specification. Callum manages project delivery, furniture sourcing and contractor relationships. In practice, the two roles overlap constantly — every project is a shared conversation from first visit to final sign-off.
Working as a two-person studio is a deliberate choice. It means every client works directly with the people who designed their rooms, and that nothing is handed off. The studio takes on a limited number of projects each year to keep it that way.

The studio is in Tannery Court, a short walk from Frome town centre. Visits are by appointment. We work with clients across Somerset and Wiltshire, and will travel to site throughout the region.
